Sweeping views are to be enjoyed in all directions creating some of the most stunning scenery in the North of England. Hornby is a place where tranquillity and rural delights abound, and yet, the historic City of Lancaster, and thriving market town of Kirkby Lonsdale are just a short drive away, with Manchester only one hour away.
The village has a thriving community with its village hall, primary school, Hornby Park Independent School, Saint Margaret’s Church, post office and shops.
The Lune Valley and surrounding areas are enhanced with influences from bygone days; roman roads, now ramblers pathways, sketchy remains of Viking settlements, historic churches and unspoilt villages. The Dales and the Settle to Carlisle Victorian railway are also a flavour of what you will find close by, combined with tumbling streams and wooded valleys, this is the landscape that inspired the great English painter JMW Turner in the 1800’s, and became immortalised in Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre.
The Lune Valley is still a sanctuary for artists, writers, walkers and photographers. Nearby lies the Crook o’ Lune, a popular riverside picnic area with spectacular views, close to the village of Caton. The viewpoint is at the centre of the Millennium Park, a 10 mile cycle route and footpath that follows the River Lune to Lancaster. If you are feeling really active then follow The Millennium Park footpaths and cycle routes which also link into other footpaths and the Lancashire Coastal Way. If all this is not enough then simply slip across the Cumbrian border to view the dramatic Lakeland Fells.
